We are buying a place in Southern New Mexico 6281 elevation with two spring fed ponds.

We'd like to introduce some frogs but bullfrogs eat too many fish. Turtles might do the same.

We wil need some aquatic plants and there are cattails. birds need a place to hide but so do turtles and frogs. There is algae and frogs will eat that.

Any good ideas for such a pond> Temps go to near freezing winter nights summer highs 75

Any creative ideas. Ponds are about 50 ft in diameter- they could be enlarged or deepened as the water flow from the mountains is steady.

I would caution you to not introduce anything, flora or fauna, that is not native to the area. It might even be illegal to do so.

Check with the NM Department of Natural Resources, or what ever the name is, to find out what is allowable. Regulations and penalties are really being tightened down on non-native introduction.

Same opinion here. Bullfrogs, if not native, will absolutely decimate other species of frogs, snakes like water snakes and garters, etc. They eat everything that they can put into their mouths.

Try a little experiment, stack some shale up around the south facing side of the pond and watch it for a year. You may find stuff basking there that already exists in the pond, but you didn't realize that it was there. Lots of 'watchable wildlife' may already exist there, but there may not have yet been ideal conditions for them to be observed!

Good replies. Just let it go natural on its own and see what comes in. You may be surprised by what all gets attracted to your pond.

I put a very small preformed pond in several years ago, put in some goldfish one of my kids won at the carnival.

They're still around as well as a colony of frogs. It also attracts all manner of flying insect such as Dragonflies and Damsel Flies.

I don't filter it but do have a solar powered pump to circulate water which runs a few hours a day. I don't even feed the fish, they survive on the algae and what ever bugs land on the water.
