Wow, I also clicked on the other stories linked in this article. That is frightening, considering my kids used to play in a very shallow river at a State park, and we routinely saw beavers.

like most wild animals, if you leave them alone, they'll leave you alone. I used to see them all the time where I lived before. I just told them how cute they were while I made a big circle of avoidance.


JanND, just teach your kids to respect wild life. They're not toys, not pets. Their focus is survival at all costs. Acknowledging that goes a long way towards safety.

Beavers are rarely aggressive but can get rabies sometimes and become aggressive. In water they are incredible swimmers, on land they are somewhat slow and awkward. In other words, giving them some room and using a little common sense if they appear agitated goes a long way.

the only thing i know about beavers is "beaver hunt" from my teenage days...
