I was like many who always had a negative view of hyenas. I thought of hyenas as evil, dirty scavengers with no redeeming values, and cheered those videos where they were attacked by lions. Think "Lion King."

After watching a few videos, though, I have softened my view of them, and in fact I now find them quite fascinating. I was surprised at how intelligent they are, especially in regards to social intelligence, even more so than lions. Their society is quite complex and based on a matriarch, where even the alpha male ranks lower than a female infant hyena.

I saw a film years ago about hyenas.

Very interesting animal. Half cat, half dog.

I agree Suburban, wish more people appreciated them.

Yeah, I understand that the lady hyenas are actually larger than the guys, and they rarely accept an adult male in their pack to run with them and when they do he's a fawning, toady twerp. If he has any attitude at all, they boot him out.
