I saw this cute video that explain how rats get to your toilet. Can they be this strong enough to pop the lid and get out to your house?

The lid on my commode is light-weight plastic, so I'm sure they could. Now with a good, heavy wooden lid, maybe not. I always leave my lid up, so it's a mute point. I do believe, though, I'd rather have rats go on into my house, than to have one pop out at me when I raised the lid in anticipation of a number 2.

No, they can't.

What they do instead is they wait until someone lifts the lid and sits down. Then they bite something.

Usually, whatever is dangling.

One made its way into the toilet when I was growing up. He was treading water when my sister discovered him and notified us with a scream. I wanted to use my BB gun but my father took an old broom, drowned him, and flushed him back down before I could deliver the coup de grace.

It did not look like he could have made it out, but I read that they can tread water for three days. That and the fact that they get that far through a pipe makes one wonder.

Vile but resilient creatures.

Years ago our bathroom sink started backing up with water. I thought it was the trap so I pulled it out to clean it out. Trap was free but I noticed there was something stuck in the pipe that goes from the trap into the wall and I pulled it out with a coat hanger. Turned out it was dead, yucky, decomposing rat that had tried to run up the pipe but got stuck in it and died.

The worst thing about rats is that they rarely flush.
