I've seen these fly around before, and I've always been curious as to what they are. From far away, they have brown or purple wings. But up close, they kind of look like yellow jackets with black and yellow stripes. However, they seem to be a bit too slender to be one, and I see to see some black antennas on them (with them not being yellow). Are these wasps, or are they some other type of bug?

It didn't look big enough to be a hornet.

Do a search for hoverfly. They belong to the family of Syrphidae.
