About 15 years ago I was walking through a park in Santa Clara County and had the sighting of a lifetime. I'm sure I will never win the lottery or get struck by lightning because this happened to me. Big, stocky black cat walking around in the middle of the day, out in the open even. I'm positive it was a panther or jaguar.
Now there have been more sightings recently and I'm starting to think this wasn't a fluke. It was about 30 miles away from where I had my sighting, but big cats range over a very large area and so that wouldn't be out of character for them.
Jaguars are even more nocturnal in habit than cougars. If you saw it in the middle of the day it is unlikely to be a jaguar. Additionally melanistic aka black jaguars, are very uncommon and in full sunlight their spots are typically very apparent and would have been noticed.
Also 15 years apart would not be the same animal you saw. And assuming there was somehow a breeding pair of jaguars, the odds of both of them and their offspring all being melanistic is infinitesimally small.
Jaguars don't even range into N CA. And they are of a distinctly different build than Mountain Lions. Much more strongly built, heavier. Mountain Lions are slimmer and sleeker. Built for the rocks and cliffs. Best free climbers in the world hands down. And that's with carrying a deer in their mouth.

That always amazed me. Same goes for leopards in Africa... bolt straight up a tree with lightning speed while carrying an impala in its mouth. Immense power!
