My friend killed squirrel on purpose now I feel horrible. (birds, destructive)

I remember the time I was out shooting with some friends. Heard a sound from a nearby tree. Sighted it and shot. Killed a squirrel (Head shot) and looked at it and realized that I had killed for no good reason. I haven't had a rifle since them and that was in 1988.....To this day, I still regret it.
A rat is a rodent. A squirrel is a rodent with a cute tail. You wouldn't worry about running over a rat.
Rats carry disease and like to live with humans so their disease spreads easily. Squirrels don't particularly like humans and live outdoors so even though they're rodents, they aren't much of a threat like rats are. So yeah, squirrels are cute and NOT deadly.
We used to hunt squirrels with rifles when I was a kid. We would eat them. Can't say they were that great though. We would also eat frog legs and rabbits. Also raised beef and that was much better. Myself, I don't find it entertaining to kill something for no reason. If it is food, that's different.
Your friend sounds like a sadistic jacka**. No way would I want to have anything to do with someone like that.
And no, I don't think you are overreacting....it's a normal response to have compassion for another living creature, especially one who was killed on purpose for "fun".
How do I stop thinking about his death? I feel like I could have stopped it? Maybe I need therapy for feeling so guilty about things like this.

Look what the guy did was wrong. No one should kill an animal unless it's necessary...for food, self-defense, to end suffering, etc. But a squirrel...well, I just don't even know how to express my feelings about how much of an overreaction this is.
Forget the squirrel. I wouldn't associate with a guy who acts like a 16-year-old swerving his car all over the road even if the nearest wildlife is 50 miles away.
I definitely am having second thoughts. He is a co-worker. We were on our way to jump his car. Im beside myself. I don't know why, I'm a grown ass man..lol...I just can't help but think of his life and if he had a family.
If the squirrel had a family left behind, seriously ??
Aren't you a city bus driver, if so is this reckless coworker also a bus driver.
