What a beautiful story, Zoisite! Thanks for sharing that. They truly are amazing birds.

Right now, the two remaining babies are huddled in the corner of the nest box and mama is sitting in the doorway. So cute!

Edited to add: I, too, was very surprised that the two later hatchlings survived. I thought the parents would only feed the two larger babies or that, as they grew older, the larger ones would kill or force out the smaller ones. This is one extraordinary owl family!

I'm corn-fused! Now there are three owls napping in the nest box. Is mom taking a nap with the kids, or did one of yesterday's escapees return for a rest?

Zoisite, just a thought here re: being unable to see live feed of camera bc of out of country location. I also could not see live feed via the link PJ supplied, so I took note of the website address and went there through my browser (Firefox) and was able to view live feed. This might work for you. (I am in country, so it may not work for you, but being in or out of country may not be the issue, just a thought)

I'm thinking that when there is an abundance of food and thus less stress on the parent birds, they can afford to feed all the baby birds fairly equally.

It's amazing how survival behaviors have evolved.

Great thread.

It's very dark in the nest box right now, but we should get a better view in a couple of hours. Two babies still cuddling in the back.

Yep. He left yesterday. Not sure whether it was the fledgling or a parent that was snoozing in the box with the smaller two babies yesterday afternoon. Here's my screen shot of the box this morning.

Believe I saw one fledgling leave the box around 6:20pm, per Indiana website....waited for 30 min. before posting......

appears to be one left in upper left corner of box

Edit...now, later, I don't see any of them.
