Catherine Veerhusen and her husband were driving northbound along the 80th Street SW bridge over U.S. Highway 30 in Cedar Rapids on Sunday when they spotted a herd of deer in front of them.

They had hoped the herd would somehow stay away from oncoming traffic while also not jumping over the bridge's west side.

You could say the same about any deer that runs in front of a vehicle. The deer did not expect the ground to be 20 or 30 feet away; the same as they did not expect the vehicle to smash into them. You are actually watching evolutions; the ones that make the wrong choice will not pass along their genes. I know that this sounds cruel and harsh; but that is nature. Deer only have a very short lifetime; here is one study that puts their average age at 4.5 years: https://www.uwsp.edu/wildlife/Ungula...e-History.aspx.
