If you take religion out of the picture, people are nothing more than another animal species which has evolved like so many others with unique abilities and qualities. Like all other animal species, we'll also be extinct in a matter of time and the earth will go on producing more and diverse plants and animals. There's nothing new or sad about this. Life will continue but not with people, just like it did without dinosaurs.

Sounds more like it to me. However, I don't see it as anything to get in a swivet about as our own lifespans are relatively brief, so it doesn't even get on the list of problems.

Of course this is true. The sun is at least half way through it's life cycle. Once the sun starts to decline everything will be gone. Of course that could also happen before then with a good meteor strike that knocks the earth off it's current rotation. If that's the case, perhaps some bacteria might survive.
