Horses can develop chronic coughs for a variety of reasons. They have to be treated elst those chronic coughs can lead to other things.

Expand the suggested volunteer work to a 501c(3) horse rescue -- you will see a lot more than chronic coughs and severe horse depression brought into those stalls ------

As far as moods ---- well ---- I've had dogs stop eating when their lifelong friend passed away. I've also had horses go into depression when their herd mate of 22 years had to be laid to rest.

Yes. I am familiar with animal depression. I was talking about something else.

And, whomever said I haven't seen animals with chronic, convulsive coughs that go on for hours and days until they almost pass out - must be my limited exposure to animals.

OP you got lots of answers before from different posters who have been around animals. Why go through it all again?
