How could he possibly have learned how to do that? There would be no second chances.
Well, I have rats and squirrels. Not bragging really!
So, I've set traps up in a couple of places. The claw kind you've described, and the other wooden ones.
Peanut butter , cheese, both.

And the cheese is getting eaten, and the trap has sprung...but no rat. Over and over again!
Same with the claw.
I'm thinking this sucker is playing a game with me...

Long story short, I'm beginning to think all these squirrels in my yard must have apart in this.
Do they eat cheese? Like peanut butter? lol

The pest control people are coming out next week. I hear the rats at night in the attic.
They sound like they're building a condo up there sometimes.

BTW...I did catch one in the garage, on one of those sticky traps. He was still alive so i covered him with the other sticky trap i had and stepped on it lightly...squealllllllllll

I quit putting up bird feeders years ago because of it.

Try safflower seed. Birds like it, squirrels don't.

My parents have been feeding the squirrels for decades. They come up to the window to look in and see if anyone is home. If no one is forthcoming with peanuts, they will bang against the window to alert them to their presence. They've really become quite spoiled.

One word of warning out of the UK: https://phys.org/news/2015-04-grey-s...osts-lyme.html. For all those that love squirrels you could be leaving the back door open to burglars or worse. Deer ticks are very small and very hard to spot. As you walk on the lawn that you have dozens of squirrels feeding on and as you let your pets run outside; you could be setting yourself up for a life altering disease.

Squirrels are rodents and can cause expensive damage to homes. If you get one in your attic and it chews into your electrical system it is very expensive to repair. We have pecan trees and it's a battle to keep the squirrels out of the trees. I do not like squirrels.

The battle for pecans started long ago. I always called it the War of the Pecans hubby vs the squirrels. One morning we got up and stepping out the front door laying on the porch was 3 cracked pecans. Sort of like "look here old man we got the pecans while you were sleeping!" They are smart and certainly tenacious. We have red tail hawks nesting in our lower 2 wooded acres. They do pick up squirrels then 10 more appear.

I used to love feeding the birds but then I wound up with a stray cat who comes & goes so I don't want to entice the birds anymore so the cat can kill them. BTW I had the cat spayed and she stays in at night.
