Why does it seem that everyone has a fascination with palm trees? People pretty much plant them as long as they can grow in the climate even if they are not native to the area. A lot of places also plant seasonal palms that are only outside during the summer.

Does anyone know why everyone seems to have this fascination?

"Everyone" doesn't. I don't "love", have never desired to own, plant, or gaze at palm trees. For those who do, maybe what they love are the associations palm trees create: the beauty of the tropical locales they are native to.

I didn't say that everyone actually loves them, I was saying that it seems like everyone loves them.

I am a northerner who moved south 11 years ago. I’ve always wanted a palm tree and now I have one. I notice that, like anything else, an unkempt one is ugly. I also have some bananas and citrus. I enjoy them and take care of them.

Because they are pretty. They are generally very symmetrical and humans equate symmetry with neatness and attractiveness.

For me, it's because they're not something I see every day. If I did, I'd probably find them less interesting.

They are most interesting to me when they are small and the dead fronds are removed. When the iconic mexican palm gets 60 ft tall it is flat out ugly to me. It disrupts otherwise attractive views by sticking straight up into the air.

Their value is they don’t take up much land area. They grow quickly in the right climate. They are super tough and bendable since they don’t have wood in their trunks, just fibers. And they do remind people they are in “idyllic” Mediterranean looking areas. If that’s your preference.

Mexican fan palms are truly ugly. They are all over SoCal & grow like weeds. They don't provide a shade canopy. Some genius planted two of them close to my house. They were a mess to care for. The dead fronds have a knife-sharp edge & rats live in the treetops.

I think native palms in tropical areas are beautiful.

When I moved to the PNW, I thought that was it for seeing palm trees all the time...but guess what? People grow palm trees here.

That would be a Balsam Fir tree, very neat with a symmetrical branch pattern with a narrow pyramidal top.

Personally I prefer fir and spruce trees to palm trees.
