I'll add the barn owl - I think their sounds get mistaken for screech owls sometimes.

Late to the story here, but have you ever heard a bull elk at night during rutting season? THAT is creepy!

I tried to do a silent spiritual retreat in West Marin during white mule deer rutting season.

Naive! I have never heard such a sound before or since. 24/7.

They should have warned me or given me a discount. I guess they got some instant karma when I was caught sunbathing nude on the doorstep of the remote cabin. Hey it was burning hot with clear skies! I thought nobody else was around. Sure seemed like it. Just at that moment though, a woman decided to take a walk and voila! reported me and I was asked to not come back. They allowed me to finish the retreat, though.

Just outside West Palm Beach, FL there is a campground with an attached drive through safari. There are about 2 dozen lions in there. Camping you can hear them roar occasionally. At first it sounds like the noise is being piped over on loudspeakers. But that is just their natural sounds. Loud & guttural. The volume is overwhelming. Even at a distance. I remember hoping that the fence between us & them holds up while we camped there.
2 dozen lions, what is that safari trying to accomplish?????

The place is probably some sort of big cat sanctuary crammed full of unwanted exotic pets abandoned by stupid people. Hopefully they had all of them neutered, put on contraceptives, or they're segregated so they don't produce more surplus lions. The drive through safari is an attempt to raise enough money to keep the poor things fed until they die of old age.

I think I saw that sancturary on a TV segment years ago, or possibly on YouTube. I got the impression they take care of their cats, sure hope so.

It’s more like a squeal than a bugle, though. Some guy probably didn’t want to call a he-bull noise a squeal.

I've always loved wolves. Is this book sad?

Foxes. I thought they were birds. Just a weird squawk.

I loved this book. American Wolf: A True Story of Survival and Obsession in the West, by Nate Blakeslee. There are some sad parts because real life has some sad parts, but it's worth reading.
