Last night I was going through my old National Geographics, mostly from the late 1960's through early 1970's. One of the articles from, I think, 1968 was from the then-recent discovery that hyenas were predators as much or more than they were scavengers.
I read that the male lion will target the hyena pack leader, which is an alpha female and tear her to pieces if he can. Puts the hyena pack in disarray.

Just curious as to where you read that. I always thought male lions don't do much killing or hunting. One of my old magazines referred to males as being "indolent freeloaders." (link, quote below).

But the pride females will drive her off. Male lions, usually depicted as indolent freeloaders Who let the lionesses do all the hunting, are not mere Parasites. They maintain the integrity of the territory
If you get a chance see this famous documentary from NG
The end is amazing. The hyena pack gets bolder and start harassing a group of lionesses. Out of the blue come the two male lions and the chase is on. The hyena matriarch is targeted and the pursuit is incredible but in the end the male lion kills her with one swath.

The males aren't known to participate in hunts, but they definitely kill. Males step up to protect their pride/territory from threats such as other male lions or in this case hyenas.

I've never heard this before but quite believable.

There was a video/documentary a long time ago entitled Lions and Hyena: Eternal Enemies.
There was a sequence when the lead hyena came into the pack and seriously injured the lead lioness, and when the male lion came back to the pack after being away somewhere, they told what had happened. You could watch it. The other females told him.
And off he went. The Hyena pack was kind of waiting for this, and when he burst into their territory, most of the hyenas kind of parted and left a path for him - they knew he wasn't after them, but rather, the lead female.
And yes, he took her out. Quickly.
fascinating
