Reading this got me to thinking of when i had horses, allways wanted a mule for some strange reason though, mayby it's them ears
Donkeys & mules are neat preferance towards the mules though, you don't see many though, wonder why.
Let's say you did a lot of trail riding, which would you prefer the horse or mule.

We have a mini mediterranean donkey as a companion to our Morgan horses.

Great entertainment ... easy to keep. The mini donkey is worthless as a pack animal.

We have friends with a couple of 18 hands mules ... superb trail animals, go anywhere, very sure footed, and they can cover a lot of ground very quickly. If I didn't have superb trail Morgans and an Arab, I'b be riding the mules.

For trail riding:
1. Mules are more sure-footed, I've heard
2. Mules tend to be less reactive, like a donkey, than a horse which may spook easier at new things. Mules think things over first
3. Mules have harder hooves, like a donkey.
4. Mules have greater endurance than most horses.

Horses are prettier to look at, and mules have some special equipment requirements due to their low withers, like a crupper to keep the saddle from sliding forward.

There is a reason they use mules for the Grand Canyon trail rides. I was lucky enough to ride to Phantom Ranch 2 years ago, and that's when I fell in love with the mules. The waiting list for retired Canyon mules is very long.

Missouri Mules (where I live) have been around for a long time. They are a cross between a mammoth jack and a draft horse mare. Check out this website:
