I was outside last night taking my dog out and I saw this giant black blob. I couldn't see it well and I wanted to see what is it? heres a picture

Pic didn't come through for me (all it shows is an "x") If you want to research it yourself, go to the site www.whatsthatbug.com . They have lots of pics and if you still can't find it, e-mail them a picture and you location & they will identify it for you.

Looks similar to a Dobsonfly...?

I've seen bugs that look like the ones in the wiki but without the nasty looking mandibles.

I agree, some kind of Dobsonfly or fishfly. Those are actually antennae rather than mandibles. Looks pretty intimidating but it couldn't hurt, um, a fly.

If the antennae are fuzzy that's a fishfly.
