GaPeach"I hope we get to come there and catch some of those carp you like so much Gunluvver.

Actually GaPeach I very seldom fish for Carp. I use a bow & arrow. In late spring at Big Mac the Carp start schooling and if you have a boat you can spot them from the swirls in the water. Usually at about the same time the Cottonwood trees are releasing their cotton seeds and the Carp suck this off the top of the water. On a good day you can fill a pickup truck with Carp. I pick out the best and smoke them but I used to have a Cousin that lived in Ogalalla and I would take all the rest of them to him and he laid them in furrows in his garden and covered them up. If you decide to do this in your garden dribble a stream of Parson's Ammonia on top of the furrow. Other wise you will have every cat or coon in the area digging up your fertilizer.

If you want to catch the Carp on a rod & reel the best bait I have found is sweet corn. Small hooks with two or three kernels work best. The Carp tend to suck them in and small hooks are easier to remove yet the Carp don't spit them out.

GunL, we use fish fertilizer in our garden too, but it's the store bought kind . No telling where it comes from, but it says organc . Also anything near the pond we had grew really well . When we cleaned it out we threw the water around the area . But the best ever was donkey doo . We gave her away to a good home so no more donkey doo. Miss her braying every morning and we sure loved her .

I found out the hard way carp is best from fresh water. When I moved to Harsen's Island in Michigan, springtime huge carp were there thick as could be, spawning. But in swampy areas. The 'locals' were using bow and arrow, looked easy enough. 1st one we speared was probably 20#. Stunk up the house terrible when we fried it ,after we had gutted and cleaned it outdoors.
Turns out the locals were selling their catch for fertilizer or to guys from down south that would cruise by to buy them. "I'll give you five dolla"
My dad was surprised when I told him how bad the carp was. He grew up in NE and caught fresh water carp all the time!

I remember now when we were at Big Mac about 8 or 9 years ago the carp were sunning themselves at the top of the water and we had to keep yelling at our dog Kodiak not to jump in the lake, he was dying to go in and swim after them. We could have just scooped them up with a net if we'd wanted.

If you are interested in doing some trout fishing, Verdigree Creek about an hour from Norfolk will get you hooked. Mainly stocked trout, rainbows and an occasional brown here. Very nice area, excellent camping, clear stream, easy to wade and plenty of fish and hospitiallity from locals. Another 100 miles west and you have Long Pine Creek, very good also.
