Probably overall a good thing for Grand Island and McCook, hopefully someone can step in and give them decent service.

A regional airport for the Tri Cities was investigated, but two things stood in the way. First, Hastings was willing to concede the location to Grand Island, but Kearney would have no part of that. Secondly, and this is the killer, is that this is a whole new era in federal regulations and there really is no satisfactory location that would be central to build a decent sized airport, because of the waterways, environmental and wildlife concerns, blah blah blah. The old ordinance plant west of Grand Island was considered, but it was owned by the US Army back then and they weren't interested.
So, if they were to build one central airport, it likely would be less convenient for all three cities, having to be considerably further from the river valley and flyways than the existing facilities.

Probably the best thing for everybody is for GI to pursue an airline on their own without EAS funding. I remember before deregulation when Frontier and Air Wisconsin were both flying into and out of GI daily with full sized jets and we were putting butts in seats.
