I have asked in this forum before, but I hadn't done much research. Can I legally leave the country when I am 18 even though I am living in Nebraska? The legal age in Nebraska is 19 but, when I am 18 I can rent an apartment in my own name. If I go into another state, where the legal age is 18, and rent an apartment there, can I then legally and freely leave the country? Can my parents or police forcibly get me back? I have everything I need to move into a different country.

I'm not a legal expert, but it seems like you would petition a juvenile court judge in your district to become an emancipated minor.

Here's a website that addresses what's required for emancipation in Nebraska:

How to get emancipated in Nebraska - Labor Law Talk Blog

Let us know what you find out. I didn't realize the age of majority was 19 there.

As for the next step, leaving the country, you would have to consider our laws and their laws. Do you want to come back? Are you going there to go to college? (may need a student visa).

It's pretty easy to go to many countries for college, on a student visa. To actually move there might be more problematic. It depends on the country.

I think most of us were in a real hurry to get on with life when we were your age but, as someone who has been there, done that (in my own way), looking back I really wonder where my head was. I 'thought' I was mature, all grown up ... but, few of us are. The brain keeps developing till one's mid-20s.

I don't know the rules that will apply in your case (sorry - the post above by Meemur gives you a link that will help you in your research) but I beg you to take a deep breath before you act rashly. The next year will go by fast as it is, I promise - and you may change your mind about where you want to go and why in that time too. If you run off to a place where you know no one and without funds or skills to help you support yourself, it may be more than scary and you may be quite lost. I know you feel grown up .. I empathize .. but, think again, think more, research a lot, save up ... then act - don't act and then regret. Good luck.

Your question can only be answered by an attorney or other person who is knowledgeable about this area of the law in the area you live in.

OP, I read your other set of posts, and it looks like you want to move to Germany. As stated by another poster, you can only stay for 3 months, unless you're going to college there.

Hmmmm, no you don't.

You have not researched this. When German Customs ask you what the purpose of your visit is, what will your answer be?
When they question you why you do not have a return ticket, what will your answer be?
