We are relocating from Salt Lake area and need to find a house somewhere between Grand Island and Cheyenne (would prefer to be no further east than Kearney, due to work). I have noticed home prices are pretty awesome in Sidney, but worry about the local economy with the Cabelas/Bass Pro merger. I don't want to buy a home in Sidney and then have Bass Pro pull out all or most of Cabelas and be left with a ghost town and a house no one wants to buy. Sidney is appealing because it's close'ish to Denver/Cheyenne for the bigger city vibe, but still small and quite and perhaps a bit safer..any comments? Thanks.

Doubt Bass Pro will abandon Sidney flagship (tho anything is possible)

Don’t over pay for a House.... they can be tough to move / unload.

Why not Pine Bluffs? Income tax free WY is likely a benefit during your earning yrs.

I fled to an income tax free state in my 20’s and decades later still keep my domicile and investment income sourced from no income tax states. Saves trouble, time, taxes.

Bass Pro Shop will still have a presence in Sidney, but most of the jobs will be eliminated or go to their headquarters. As long as you don't overpay, I think Sidney will be fine. It will struggle for the next several years, but they are working on slowly filling the giant hole Bass Pro Shop is leaving. Its a buyers market due to people moving due to the significant loss of jobs as a result of the buyout. The town will recover though, and home prices will eventually go up too as it does.
