When my family moved from St. Louis to Omaha, they used U-Haul. I would do a google search for "free moving estimates" or something to see which company gives the best rate. Most companies have some form of insurance that insures your stuff will be safe.

We used a moving company for the 1st time in our lives when we moved TO Nebraska from SC; Uhaul was impractical for moving over 13,000 lbs of housewares, over 1700 miles, with a disabled hubby. Allied came in, did a binding estimate that held them to a price (they severely underestimated, as they found out later when they weighed the truck!), and we could set our delivery date out a little to accommodate our time frame. We were in daily touch with the driver, they came in, packed everything, loaded everything, and unloaded at the NE house on the date we said, even putting things in the shops, garage, upstairs and in the basement - all for the stated price. If there had been any problems, Allied even has storage in major cities where you can pay to have your goods stored for a month or more if there are problems.

My daughter moved from SC to Las Vegas and went with a 'national' company we had never heard of (she found them on the Internet). They told her what date they would deliver (and actually delivered it 1 day prior, which could have been a hassle if there weren't friends there). They also were a day late to load, had underestimated HER freight weight - and tried to demand the difference when they got to Vegas, refusing to unload unless her friends paid the difference! (No she didn't pay the upcharge.) So keep your paperwork in order, make sure it is a binding estimate before they ever come out to load the truck, and have the main office on your cel-phone speed dial for any problems en route or afterwards.

Check out ABF. They were a great choice for us. Cheap and reliable.

My wife and I used ABF a couple of years ago for a move from Denver to Tampa. It was a hassle-free, positive experience. We packed up the trailer in Colorado (we only used half of it since it was cheaper that way and we didn't have that much stuff) and then made a road trip of the drive across the country. We took 3 days to make the journey stopping to see friends and the sights along the way. When we got to Tampa we had another 2 days before our stuff arrived to paint and get our new house ready. ABF called the next day and said they could get us our stuff a full day and a half ahead of schedule so we took them up on it. All in all, our experience with their service was great!

We've moved from NC to Miami and back again twice. Paul Arpin movers were great. In Omaha you'll have companies who do military moves. Check with several companies and see who has experience doing military moves. I know everybody has heard horror stories about military moves but they are the exception rather than the rule.

If the company has a lot of complaints the Army quits using them.
