As a former city slicker, I had no experience with tractors, combines, and the field dance they perform this time of year, but that has changed.

My farming neighbor and I get along great, and he helped us clean up our mostly abandonded farmstead when we bought the property two years ago. He would never take any money for his time and trouble, and my debt of thanks was getting pretty tall.

This year I've been "allowed" to help with his corn harvest as I've been driving a tractor/grain cart from field to semi. At last I'm starting to feel like I'm able to repay some of his kindness to this city boy turned rural citizen.

Part of the operation involves maneuvering the grain cart into a position next to and matching speed with the moving combine so that the corn can be transfered from combine to bin on the "fly". This field dance is performed time and again, and I even got the opportunity to perform this operation in the dark. I throughly enjoy being the moving target for the combines payload.

Tractors are cool! Power everything, automatic transmissions, climate controled cab that includes armed bucket seats and fully adjustable steering column. Air conditioning of course, and much quieter than I imagined.

It wasn't long ago that I went for my first ride on a tractor, now I run one... who'd a thought?

I spent many hours on a tractor, combine or in a truck as a kid on the farm. Our main crop was wheat. My Dad used to get so mad at me because instead of applying ALL of my attention to keeping the tractor running perfectly straight I would be watching hawks, deer, coyotes or clouds. The only thing that kept him from firing me was I worked cheap LOL.

You brought back some old memories there Off Pavement. Haven't helped with harvest now for 2 years except as a spectator.

Glad you enjoyed your experience, you wearing a John Deere hat yet?

I would, but they were presents and I wouldn't feel right about it... beside, my coffee comes in one or the other every morning and I'm afraid I'd be lost without 'em.

Thanks for the offer though!

I just got done with 3 weeks of the tractor and combine dance.
I got dazed by a few of the sunsets but was afraid if I took my camera
it would get broken.
