Nice pictures; especially the Mt. Charleston one. Nevada seems like such an under-appreciated state for its scenery. Was just in Reno, with the mountains surrounding the city etc. The air seemed fresher as well... perhaps similar in this regard where you're at.

You see many young people in Pahrump? How often do you drive into Vegas?

Great thread and let's keep those pics comin'

I used to work in LV, so I commuted an hour each way every day for 3 yrs. There are some people that have been doing this commute forever & I don't envy them! Nowadays, I make the trip.....once a month? Maybe once every other month. Just depends on what I've got going on.

The population of all Nye County is ~45k. Pahrump itself is somewhere around ~37k. We are close in size to Mesquite, but have very different ammenities.

Young people in Pahrump? Well...that's a mixed bag. Teenagers, yes. Young adults? Not so much. In the past Pahrump was a retirement community. During the building boom, we had a lot more people that were willing to make the drive to LV for work, so the young adult population increased a tadbit. But we don't have the nightlife that most young adults are looking for. I am 40, have been here for 8 yrs & have never been one for the party nightlife atmosphere. I have found plenty of friends here that are close to my age & have the same viewpoint.

Shoot! i just remembered we have a fairly brand new ISP here in town called Wave Direct. I've been receiving fliers in the mail for them the last 2 months or so.

Also, check out connectnv.org - it's a HUGE project to bring broadband to rural communities. They've been working on it for a while, not sure when it's supposed to go live, but I have heard they are running from Vegas right down Hwy 160 & up Hwy 95.

after many years of teasing by Lowe's, we FINALLY got our very own Home Depot in 2008. hard to believe they've been here 4 yrs already! the builders/owners did their homework - we are the only HD to have riding lawn mowers in Southern NV; horse corrals; motorhome parts & they did not put in an equipment rental department because they did not want to put or few mom & pop rental places our of business. they also did a very good job of hiring locals

because we are rural, we have a few more hoops to jump thru than other locations....

the first picture is of the County's Emergency Services building, the second is of the Town's Fire/Ambulance station. when you call 911 here, you talk to a County employee in our Sheriff's office dispatch. that person takes all of your information & if it's a fire or ambulance call, they page the Town's Fire/Ambulance station (those individuals are mostly volunteers, they do have some paid positions, but not many). if the Town needs assistance, the County will roll out it's Fire/Hazmat trucks.

I know in the past when other states (AZ or UT) have had really bad fires, County firefighters have gone to those states to help out. I am not sure if the Town had any of their firefighters go as well???

This weekend is Beatty Days!! Beatty is located about an hour north of Pahrump - head up Hwy 95 & you can't miss it. It's a 3 day event full of good time fun, like a belching contest; antique cars; bed races; chili cookoff & vendors!

Check out Beatty Chamber of Commerce website for the schedule of events. I will take some pix while I'm up there & post 'em when I get back.

Have a fabulous Nevada Day everyone!!

Beatty Days was goregous again this year! Got a few pix of the area while I was there. As for the cops....it really depends on where you are. The speed limit in town is 25 & yes they enforce it! Before & after town the limit is 70 & as long as you keep it under 80, you'll be fine.

If you plan to shop at the antique store, bring your entire savings account! This guy is waaaaaaay overpriced but has great stuff to look at.

The burros come out mostly at dawn & dusk. Cute little things that leave presents in everyone's yard.....

These are pix from Hwy 95 - on your way to Beatty.

The pond is just south of Beatty. I believe this is part of the Amargosa River that is above ground, most of the river is underground.

The red mountain - I'm not sure on this one. It looks to me like someone has peeled away the top layers of dirt & this is the pretty insides of the hill. It could also be the remnants from another project. Always cool to look at when the surrounding area is tans & browns, the red dirt certainly does stand out!

The Alien Center - this is Dennis Hof's latest cathouse. The green building is a convenience store/gas station, along with a restaurant (I heard it wasn't very good). The pink part of the building is the adult entertainment section. Originally this was "Nevada Joe's", same concept (minus the restaurant), just a different owner & different color scheme.

Our very own hospital, opened in 2006. Prior to that we had/have a urgent care facility. Our hospital is 70,000 sq feet, with 25 private rooms & a helicopter pad. When the hospital had their grand opening, the public was invited to come tour the facility. They were asking for blood donations on the tour - to build up their blood supply but also to get a better idea of problems in the community (high cholesterol, diabetes, etc).

I know that for some issues, you will be flown/driven into LV for treatment. Sometimes we have the appropriate doctor positions filled, sometimes we don't.

I have been to this emergency room (located on the back side of the hospital) twice as a patient & once as the loved one. Don't get in a hurry, cuz unless you've got a serious injury...you're not getting in & out quickly. Staff has always been friendly & I've had a few friends work here, who said they pay well & are always in need of help. So if you've got experience in the medical field, maybe you can find a job here?
