If you read my other responses you'll see how fed up I am on Reno. I can't go back to Dayton - there is nothing available and usually a list of applicants for one house - other homes going for $2200+. I can't shake my head hard enough. Same with Fernley.

So to stay close to my mom with cancer and my dad who needs 24/hr care - either I run over to CA or try and find something in rural NV. I prefer rural - used to it.

But I need some insight from anyone who has actually lived in some of these towns -
Yerington
Winnemucca
Carlin
Lovelock
Hawthorne

And anything else that isn't southern NV. I really don't want to cross the border and do Susanville or Portola.

I'm a single mom but a pretty tough cookie as far as getting my hands dirty. Not a big socialite or needing endless shops and other city "perks". I know some areas can be a bit harsh for a single woman - although that doesn't scare me, I need to know what I'm facing. I like small communities not big impersonal ones. Have one teen son and dogs.

Walmart is optional - but a main grocery store is a must like Smith's etc. Possibly a locally owned place.

And idea for rentals - CL is a pain and I don't trust it anymore. Should I go "old school" and drive around looking for rental signs? Weather doesn't deter me. I lived on top of a mountain in Montana, 20 acres, screwed up roads.

Any ideas would be great. I figure I am mostly relegated to what area has a stray rental. And I'm not moving for 8 months but starting early. *I broke down in Winnemucca one time. Is it my wrong impression that the town is mainly a stop over for trucks? Is there there more to it?

Thanks.

If you wiki any of those cities, you will get a good picture. I have been looking for an inexpensive home to buy in those I-80 towns. I don't think it would be nearly as isolated as small towns off the Interstate, like Ely. Most are going to have a few casinos and gas/food/lodging. I80 is a super major east/west route for trucks, and that might keep grocery prices within reason. Continuing gold mining operations are a big part of the economy. Personally I hate the meth-heads and I do t think it is that bad up there compared to most of rural America. I could be wrong. Lovelock, Elko, Battle Mountain, Wendover. Check Realtor for rentals.

I would go with either Winnemucca or Elko. The other towns mentioned are small and somewhat boring. Yerington has a Scolari market, Lovelock has a small Safeway and I don't think Carlin has a market, but Elko is 15 miles away.

Both Elko and Winnemucca have a Walmart and other supermarkets. Amtrak also stop in both towns once a day. Check out Winnemucca www.winnemucca.com I like the place and surrounding area.

I didn't realize Winnemucca has a Walmart. I think it's time I do a road trip. Hard to get a picture sitting online and looking stuff up.

There is also a Raley's supermarket in Winnemucca.

If you're already used to rural living, Yerington is not bad at all.

Don't sell that Scolari's short, it's a fine grocery store. There are a few small shops that sell other things, but for the most part, you'll have to pop over to Carson City or Reno. Neither are so far away that going to town for the day is a big deal, though.

Internet access is fine, the cost of living is low, the food is pretty good, and it has small town charm in spades.
