We are a middle aged couple (not quite ready to retire) and my husband wants us to move to Carson City. I would like to hear more about the area. To learn more about things to do (we like to be busy but not extreme sports). Also about real estate. We are working folks, not rich. Wondering about a small to moderate mobile / manuf home on a small plot of land that we can own. A rental for a year might be okay but only if they will allow me to bring my two dogs (that would allow us to look for a small place to buy). What kind of jobs are available in the area. Thanks!

Skiing is the main winter sport, with numerous slopes at Tahoe.
There are several mobile home parks in and around Carson City, but you must rent the lot.
As for the job market, the many casinos in Carson City are always hiring; cooks, dish washers, porters, dealers, security, food servers, hostesses - the usual casino jobs. Every edition of the The Appeal features such such ads. Carson City is dominated by the service industry.

I lived in Tahoe for 20 years and then retired at 50 to Carson City. This town is too old for me, I am not dead yet. The only thing others do here is go to the Casinos to play slots and give away their money. If you life here expect to stay home all the time or run to Reno for the action (30 miles one way). We spend lots of gas running to Reno. Shopping is not great, food is terrible as there is no place decent to eat regularly, and the town rolls up early. The Senior drivers are a menance to the road so watch out for their poor driving. The doctors are not the best either. We do have a new hospital though.
This town is quite boring. I still find nothing to do here. If you dont go to Tahoe to ski, or hike, other fun outings are non-existant. I like some action and not always casinos.
Windy here all the time, very hot in summer (85 to 100) and cold in winter ((25 to 35). You need to have a car and drive here to get around. And the Real Estate prices went through the roof in the last three years but they are just now leveling out. You can get a Modular (3brm 2ba) on land on the edge of town for about $200,000. Homes run on average $275,000 to $425,000. And you get what you pay for here. The low end homes are small, or not the best neighborhoods. If you stay on the edge of the city you get more land and away from everyone but you will be driving all the time.
The biggest problem with Carson City is the gangs and drugs. Meth is a biggie here. The city is having a horrible time controlling it and getting it off the streets. These meth users are everywhere, driving, in the casinos, on the streets and everywhere. And they are mean, rude and can be aggressive. The Meth users here are all ages even Seniors. Also we do have a large Latino population here about 47% and most work in construction and casinos.
Please check this place out well before you buy. As soon as I can find where to go, I am out of here. I am just looking for the right business to buy. I am sick of being bored and being housebound. Life has got to be better than this.

What is the best place to finish out high for my child? I try to live where the drugs are not much of an issue. So, if not Carson City, Where? I have been on the state gov. site for jobs. But, what I am finding is, they require you to come take in person written testing? It is getting very expensive. I have three jobs I am being considered for written testing coming up on June 12, 16 and 18th; all for the state of Nevada. One is in Elko, Carson City and Sparks. I have high test anxiety. I recently went to Ca. And did there testing and I did not pass. I know I can do the job; It’s what I currently do. So, needless to say, “I did not get the job.” I currently work for, Washington State Department of Licensing, I have twenty years of customer service and fifteen years of cash handling. I applied for a County job in the Treasury and 55min. Later they called me, but my typing is about 30wpm that’s why I didn’t get the job. Anybody have any suggestions? I want to move to the boarder line of Ca. My mom lives in Hemet, CA. It’s way more expensive to live there though. Help anybody have anything??? Opinions, jobs, housing? This post is 10 years old but is it still true? Not the housing costs but the bad food, crime, and meth problems?

If you wish to live in that area go to Minden/Gardnervile and mostly rural. If you want more urban Reno/Sparks. There is no life in Carson City...unless you work for the state and have to be there.
We visited there a few months ago as a consideration for retirement. We liked it. The civic area is renovated to be a kinda walking community with restaurants whose goal is good food with locally sourced ingredients, a couple of cigar bars and stuff. Found they people super nice and had some good food.
The residents said crime isn't really a problem, they leave doors unlocked. They have things like first fridays, and wine tasting. They had at least a few events a month during the summer.

Honestly, I don't think meth is as big of a problem as people say it is, unless it's gotten a lot worse in the last several years. I lived in Carson City from 2007 to 2010, and I never encountered anybody who was selling or using it. I rode the bus for a few months after I totaled my car: if I didn't see any tweakers on there, there probably weren't that many. It might be different for high schoolers or if you're actively looking for it, I guess.
As for there being nothing to do... it's not as exciting as Reno, sure, but I wouldn't say there's NOTHING to do. Carson City has movie theaters, bowling, golf, community theater, a nice park that often hosts events, a great indoor swimming pool, and Tahoe nearby. Fandango alone has quite a bit going for it besides gambling.
It may not have designer boutiques, but it's got pretty much every chain store you could want. Two Walmarts, a Best Buy, plenty of grocery stores to choose from, JCPenney, Sears, Lowe's, Home Depot, PetSmart, Costco, several sporting goods stores, and lots of little mom and pop places to fill in the gaps. Honestly, what more do you really need?
Maybe the selection of restaurants isn't for you if you're some kind of food snob, but I was satisfied with it. A couple of different sushi places (try National's Cafe), and plenty of Mexican, Chinese, and diners. There are even a couple of Vietnamese places. It's got an example of pretty much every fast food chain, pizza chain, and several diner chains.
