Don't make me hurt ya!

What I had there before bothered folks because it was evidently too negative and I had some requests to change it. I opened it up for suggestions and offered a free dinner to the one who could come up with a better name and that was the only submission I received from a member. They won the dinner and I'm using the name until the next contest.

[quote=beagle gal;1561536]hi tressa....yes i know what you mean about moving from alaska to nevada... i grew up in jnu, (since statehood in 1959), and just moved to elko eight years ago... so its all in perspective... "it felt so good to be out of the rain" (horse with no name) ..i just love nevada...anyone who lived in alaska for a good portion of his life is so used to the wide open spaces, .. we alaskans need some place like nevada with ITS wide open spaces...i just cant live somewhere crowded with people people people... nevadas primitive landscape is appealing and seems normal to someone who grew up in alaska, which is basically very primitive also...[/QUOTE

How's your winter going there, we just got our really first snow a few days ago, but I only have 198 more days until retirement and I can head down to Lovelock

Default Agree with some Fears.

Quote:
Everyone Smokes Cigarettees (and blows it ....
AGREE - I experience this often. Try walking out of Smith's in Dayton - grocery workers stand around puffing.

Quote:
The Casinos want your money (they want it al....
AGREE - But this is a tourist state and gambling money slowly trickles down to agencies and other bureaucracy. Without the casinos (which are trying to turn themselves into RESORTS... ), Reno and Vegas would not exist.

Quote:
This is a Mining State so it has bad soil and water ...
AGREE - my unscientific experience is getting unexplained fevers and horrible coughs while out exploring places on supposed BLM land.

Quote:
Overpopulated in Reno and Vegas....
HALF AGREE - Reno; can't say it's completely overpopulated. Vegas - overbuilt definitively. Infrastructure in the bedroom communities cannot keep up - small boom towns suffer the most.

Quote:
Running out of water....
AGREE - but it's more like "bad use of water". Big developers come in and buy water rights and stick water-guzzling homes with enormous lawns and thirsty landscaping. We watched the Carson River stay EMPTY from late summer thru fall. It is still insanely low, and polluted with fertilizer, manure, and farm animal waste. Well water? Well, read above about mining. Nevada is in the rain shadow from CA -- and going thru bad dry spells are TYPICAL.

Quote:
Homes are VERY overpriced....
AGREE - 100%. I sold my home recently for $227,500 (bought it 2 years ago for $258,000). Loss for me - but at least not a foreclosure. Since there is hardly any infrastructure or retail around my area... just homes.... the house values are going to continue to plummet or stay low.

Quote:
Crime Rate is High...
NOT SURE - I've lived in other well-to-do areas of CA and experienced much more crime, drunk driving, drug dealing and the like. I'm sure Vegas is not a real safe environment - Reno is so-so. Gangs are slowly filtering in.

Quote:
Low Wages...
AGREE - And if you work for yourself... prepare for charging less to customers. Services, etc. have to devalue themselves.

Quote:
Plenty of Diversity..
NOT SURE - this is more of an immigration debate, but I will say that "diverse individuals" are taking jobs that used to go to very skilled tradesmen. The "individuals" that built my former house and all the subcontractors were good... but they built a ringer, not really a home.

Sorry to those who live in Nevada. I drove by on my way to visit family in Idaho, and I was not pleased with Nevada at all. I'm orginally from CA so yea maybe my expectations where a little high, but still Nevada did not please me at all. States like CA and Ohio are much better.
I never liked scenery in my dessert anyway.

Nevada is a great place to visit as a tourist, but would never want to live there. The desert, heat, hookers and gambling are not for every one. I love the green.....

I lived in Las Vegas for four longgggggggggg years. There is no class, culture or style in NV, even Las Vegas And forget about having your kids get a decent education. The entire state is lousey on education. I am a retired teacher and taught there and could not believe the way teachers dressed, acted, and taught. I feel that some parts of the state were occupied by people who were under a secret witness protection program. The kids I dealt with never knew their addresses, phone numbers and often said they were living in NV to hide from their abusive Dad's or Mom's boyfriend. The state is filled with gangs and drugs; more then most places. Also, they rank highest in teen's having babies.
