That because service industry jobs don't require a degree. Education is not valued very high in Nevada from what I could tell. There are loads of people working in the casinos with no degree.

RedWingsFan has it right. Nevada's economy is much more blue-collar than white-collar, with few jobs requiring a college education or much technical skill. It seems to be one of the few remaining places where people without college degrees (or even high-school diplomas in some cases) can still find some kind of work to sustain them. As a result, one shouldn't be surprised that Nevada's not really a center of sophistication.

It has been observed repeatedly on this forum and elsewhere that Las Vegas is in fact a blue color town.

That suggests that it will have a higher percentage of its population engaged in vocations requiring limited education. Like Pittsburgh and Detroit after WWII.

This however in no way speaks to "sophistication". The monied and educated classes are simply a smaller percentaqge than those in some other places. They are however similarly "sophisticated". (whatever that means)

I suspect that most of those living in the area around Detroit would willingly trade their "sophistication" for the jobs of Las Vegas.

And it in no way indicates that the western and northern suburbs would not interchange with the similar ones of say Irvine or Huntington Beach.

Default Most Vegas jobs are boring!!

While Las Vegas seems like a fun place for tourists most of the jobs in town would get very boring and dry after a few days. Anyone disagree?

Default Universal truth?

Is there any blue color or most white color job that is not boring after a few years?

The old description of flying an airplane comes to mind. Thousands and thousands of hours of boredom seperating seconds of terror.

I think we should start a Las Vegas based campaign addressing the issue of "higher education" and putting it in its place, once and for all.

Continuing on to college or university has nothing to do with intelligence, sophistication or a striving for one's ideal in life. All three things are never defined by a degree, a bank account or the superficial image, but are simply and always a matter of free choice and the personal will to incorporate these qualities into our daily lives and exemplify them by our manner and speech.

Anyone interested in reading newspapers and picking up books will never be unintelligent. Anyone appreciative of natural beauty and the divineness of its creation will never be unsophisticated. And anyone who has the courage to be who they are will always be successful in striving for their ideal.

I believe most of the problems of this day are due to people feeling disenfranchised. Societal hype can seem unattainable to many and so there is a feeling of alienation that ends up distorting their perspective of themselves and clouding the true options before them. The best lesson we can teach anyone is to be aware of and believe in the innate power they hold when they combine their imagination with will. It can carve paths through the impossible.

I know too many people, with all the bells and whistles hanging framed on their walls, who lead lives obsessed with status and the opinions of others, which is the best way to never be yourself and the best way to live in ignorance of the esoteric aspects of life's purpose.

That would be the unsuccessful and uneducated life.

That said, there are three four year colleges about 5 2 year schools in Nevada, even if they are turning out grads by the bucketful, it is silly to compare that with other states that have hundreds of colleges

And it is appropriate to the size of the state. We have one University probably just above the SUNY or Cal State Level. One at that level and one just starting up. Reasonable for a community of 2+ million. No Berkley or UCLA...but no 30 milllion people either.

Spent my life in high tech...which was my bag since I was 10 or so. It too gets old after a while. I now find chasing real estate sufficiently rewarding.

I spent over twenty years traveling around the world on business. I stayed in the best hotels and ate at the best restaurants. All of my friends and relatives thought I had the greatest job going because of the exotic places I had been to. Guess what? Like anything else it got old, boring and tiring it was still work.

In line with what dreamflower wrote I was a high school dropout (with a 156 IQ) and got my GED when I was in the Air Force. I am an avid reader and most of the TV programs I watch are news oriented. Most people that meet me take it for granted that I am a college grad with an advanced degree because of the wide scope of subjects I can talk about. Any sophistication I have is a result of the exposure I got from traveling and being exposed to many different cultures.

I was a buyer of men's and boys clothing and travelled overseas to negotiate contracts with factories. I was considered one of the top two people in the country that did what I did. After I stopped traveling I spent the last ten years of my working life in offices in white collar jobs. Having a blue, white or red collar job has nothing to do with the inate intelligence of a person.
