My family and I are considering relocating from Utah to Keene. We have 3 small children and are looking for many family activities, especially in the outdoors. We know the property tax is extremely high, but we were wondering if the lack of sales tax makes up for that? We were also wondering about the quality of the area schools?

Keene is pretty liberal if you're in to that kind of thing.

There is no income tax & no sales tax in NH. I must say though that Keene has very high property taxes. One of the smaller towns surrounding Keene might be cheaper. Good luck The schools are good in the area from what I known. Look up Keene on the search function there are many past posts on the town.

The towns outside of Keene have taxes that are about 1/2 as much. Look into Westmoreland, Harrisville, Nelson, and Stoddard.

ok, Utah to Keene with small kids? Are you comfortable moving to such a liberal town? Try reading recent local news to get an idea of the apparent liberal flavor of Keene before deciding.

Oh Wow! I didn't see that they were moving from UT. Visit first.
NH might as well be on a different planet compared to UT.

check out freekeene dot com , free state project, and youtube for tons of videos about Keene

My wife and I considered the area for about a year, we live in Ma and Fla. I lived in NH for a while in the early 90s and LOVED it.

The ONLY reason we are not moving there is due to the cold weather, the wife is not a fan of snow

Thanks for the information. One of the reasons we are leaving Utah is to find a more open minded population. My husband is from NY and I'm from MD, so we are not tied to the west. Also, we live in Moab which is not quite like the rest of the state. We're okay with the liberal folks, it's just the taxes and weather that has me a bit worried.

Weather is actually much more temperate compared to the West- particularly the wind. If you go lower in elevation near Keene the winds are nearly non-existant for the most part. Snow tires in winter are a must- particularly out in the country. Taxes are variable and differ on a town by town basis.

The lower the total tax rate- the lower the property tax bill. If a property has a larger amount of acerage a good portion of it can be put into "current use" status to lower the tax burden.

Keene sits in a bowl with all the smaller rural towns radiating out from it.

I lived in the Ogden area for a few years. It's like a different world, culturally. I truly felt like an outsider, and many times was treated like an outsider for 1) being military and 2) not being part of the "club". Moab, though, must have been much tamer culturally. Absolutely beautiful state, though.
