I heard a rumor that they are going to build a federal jail in Berlin, NH. I was wondering if this rumor is true? I am interested in moving to NH, so if the rumor is true it would be a good time for me to move there and get a new job. If anyone has information on this subject please let me know.
Thank you
I know it was on the news last night about this. I'm not sure if it's a "done deal" or in the planning stages - maybe you could contact the Berlin, NH Chamber of Commerce and they would know?
I don't know if there's a State prison there now or not, but I *think* the news said this would be Federal....I missed the news earlier tonight, will try to catch the late one
There is a state prison already there. They are upgrading to a federal prison on the same site and it is definite. This will bring a LOT of economy to the area, which it really needs. Because of the prison construction, they are going to have to put in a Sam's club, and Home Depot and are upgrading the Walmart in Gorham to a super-Walmart. The federal funding plan mandates that these food and material suppliers exist within 1/2 hour of the proposed site. All the realtors are buzzing up there, preparing for the projected shortage of inexpensive rental housing for the construction workers. You can still buy multi-family buildings up there for a song, but prices will be going up soon! The only other economy up there is logging. Tourism is starting to take hold as it is a beautiful area, but I doubt it will ever be like North Conway. They are just opening (and still completing) the world's largest ATV park northwest of the city near Jericho Lake.
Yes as you have heard the Government is going to be builing a New Federal FCI in Berlin NH. They are giving the local people until Sept 11 to lodge thier opinions on but I am pretty sure it's a go either way. 40% of the Employees for this New Facility will be brought in from other prisons. the other 60% will be people living in the local areas. My husband works for the BOP and is from Maine we are currently in CA and we are hoping to go to this facility once it opens. You can search google news for updates on this matter just google "federal Prison Berlin NH" and press the button for google news.
I was showing properties to a client up there last spring and the local realtor told us about that. Of course I have no way to know if it is the absolute truth, but it makes sense that they would need provisions nearby for the construction and to provide supplies for all the anticipated workers, prisoners and employees.
