I am looking for a good family oriented city to raise my kids in. My wife is a nurse and, I am currently finishing my Networking specialist requirements.
I currently live in Lawrenceville, GA about 20 miles outside of Atlanta. The truth is Atlanta and it's surrounding cities and towns are being over run by thugs and wannabe thugs. You know the wear my pants under the butt, I think I'll buy a gun because it is cool crew. I know they are everywhere, but Atlanta is starting to be taken over by them.
Basically, I am tired of Atlanta, I want out. I want something peaceful, affordable, and kid-friendly place to live. I was wondering if Portsmouth or Dover has what I am looking for. I want to rent before I own, so I can save up for a house.

Come on up Both those cities are great. If you can afford Portsmouth so much the better. There are more affordable towns just north of Concord.

Thank you! I was going to make a trip in December so my wife can check it out, and we can see how the winter season is.

Well, it's cold, no getting around it. But the seacoast area is somewhat more mild with less snow. The good news is that your wife can work anywhere. Check all the prior NH threads of Dover & Portsmouth on City-Data to get an idea about the area. I will say though that Portsmouth is very expensive.

Portsmouth is wonderful but pricey in comparison to other towns or parts of NH but if you can swing it its great. I like Dover but it didn't pop for me in terms of where I'd want to live. If you'd like to stay near the coast (I'd rec. that) you'd have lots to do, be within driving distance to Boston and there are a lot of activities to do. I always liked Exeter and it was near Hampton beach which has a large strip of comic clubs, arcade band shell they do fireworks in the summer. Its def cold there I was in Portsmouth in Feb and it was fridgid cold to the point it hurt so you will have days like that but the snow amount would be significantly less than interior NE.

I'd say Nashua. It's the only city to be selected as "Best city in America to live in" twice. Even though it has some 86 thousand people it still has the small town feel to it.

I'm all for Dover...see my prior threads here! We are originally from MA, and have lived in Dover for the past 10 years and love it! Close proximity to the beaches and mountains;full-time fire, police, and EMS (you'd be surprised how many towns are not...as a paramedic in MA, this was important to our family), and a very safe small city feel. We have two school-aged children, and while the schools may not be rated the best, my children have had great educations thus far...involvement is key!

BTW...my husband is an ED nurse and I work in the medical field as well. Good number of job opportunities in the medical field around here...

Feel free to PM me with any specifics...I now live down the street from a couple I "met" here with questions concerning Dover before they made their decision!
