Just wondering. I know is probably spectacular but what is the down side also? My husband may take a new job in NH and wondering what the locals thought. Are you taxed more? And if so how much?
Property taxes in most of the Seacoast towns are actually lower than the NH average, but this is only because the property / home values are higher than average. This is the biggest downside of living on the coast. Houses are more expensive. Some shops and restaurants are also pricier because they attract lots of tourists and wealthy residents.
It's also one of the busier / more densely populated parts of the state, like the Merrimack Valley, but if you love the ocean then it's a wonderful place to live.
Oh, and if you're talking about having a home *right* on the ocean, then yeah, I imagine taxes are higher. But the cost of the home will probably kill you first.
To me, the "sweet spot" location-wise is about 30 minutes from the actual ocean. Sane property values/taxes but an easy drive to get to the water. Dover/Rochester comes to mind. As a bonus, you're that much closer to the mountains also. Double bonus - you're not in the direct path of 90% of the tourists that cruise up Rt 1.
Nice homes start at $350,000 on almost no land. Property taxes start at about $6,500 for the $350,000 house. Exeter has property taxes at about $12,000 a year for a $500,000 decent-sized Colonial.
The crowding in summer is bad, and if you want to enjoy NH's mountains you'll sit in a lot of traffic trying to go north on Friday night or back on Sunday night. It's stop-and-crawl on I-95 and the Spaulding Turnpike because seemingly half of Boston gets in their cars and drives to the NH mountains each weekend in summer.

This applies only to Route 1 and east. Tourists are on the seacoast to go to the beach or Portsmouth, not suburbia. Locals know the roads and the backroads. so, unless you live east of route 1 summer shouldn't be that bad.
95 North/South also gets traffic on Friday night and Sunday night, respectively, but honestly unless it's a Holiday weekend it's not that bad. And if you're not going to Maine for the weekend - it's easily avoidable.
