Hi!

I'm very curious to know what Milford,NH is like . I am use to the city (nearby public transportation, can walk to super market, restaurants, dry cleaning, etc.) and really don't know much about Milford . If anyone is familiar with the area, can you please fill me in a little. I presently live in MA. Thanks so much!

This may be a little too late but it's worth a shot. I lived in Milford NH for about 7 years. There is no public transportation, you can walk to a supermarket (it depends on where you live in Milford, however, I would recommend a car), there aren't a lot of good resturants in town (mostly fast food places...and I really mean about 2 of each of them!!!) I don't know off hand if there is a dry cleaners (I would imagine so, since there is a laundry mat in town).

I hope that this helps some, if at all. Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions.

my son works in Milford at a high tech company that grows sapphires and creates the scanning glass used in department stores and supermarkets - they are a fairly large world wide company with three full time shifts.

they are one of the few towns that still have a drive-in theater.

the closest city is Nashua, roughly 10 miles away, but my son commutes from Derry and it is only a half hour commute.

Milford is famous for it's antique shops and craft stores.

Funny. I lived in the area 30 years and was never aware of it's fame for craft stores, nor would I call it an antiques mecca. A few antique co-ops, yes, but nothing of note there. Overall, Milford is a nice small town, with an older central section. Lovely city oval, sometimes with performing groups, esp. on festive holidays, some cute shops there. Great fruit/veggie stands. Chain grocery stores, pharmacies. A couple decent restaurants, moderately priced. Homes in all price ranges, from moderate to very expensive. I much prefer the charm of Amherst, which is right next door.

Amherst is very beautiful and more upscale IMO.

I was specifically thinking of the card shops and craft stores in the Lorden plaza. Candlewick antiques is well known to antique dealers. Also there is J C Devine, Milford Antiques, NH Antique Co-op, Century Antiques, Elm Plaza Antiques, and My Place Antiques that I can think of right off the top of my head. They are easy to find because almost all of them are on Elm St. (antique alley).

Milford has a town square with a gazebo in the middle. Great for wedding pictures!

Lorden Plaza - are you talking about the place where Shaw's is? The gazebo is really pretty, you are right! Especially when all the flowers are in bloom. Milford has done a great job with that Oval. I like some of the shops on the Oval. There used to be a great little breakfast place there. Is it still there?

And, how about the quaint theater? Is that still there? I loved that.

Wanted to give you reps, but seems I did already recently.

I love that people are still talking about Elm Plaza Antiques in Milford as we ran that store for many years and people loved it but we closed it down over 10 years ago !!

The Oval is cute and there are some independent shops and restaurants there. They have various celebrations throughout the year - pumpkin festival at Halloween, holiday festival in December, etc. 101A runs through town and it is very congested with strip malls, fast food restaurants, etc. There is a big health club called Hampshire Hills which offers a lot of camps and classes for kids. The schools aren't as highly rated as the schools in neighboring Amherst or Hollis, but the real estate is a lot more affordable. There are some nice old houses, and if you get off the main routes you can find some lovely views of the hills. But then you probably wouldn't be in walking distance of shops and restaurants. Overall, there is a lot to do, but you would certainly want a car. I would say the same thing about almost every town in NH.

I think Milford is overrated, not a favorite place of mine. Gang activity has been allowed to take root there moreso than surrounding areas. Part of what we did not like about living in Brookline yrs ago was that we were too close to Milford.
