My husband and I are looking to relocate from Bedford to the Seacoast. We have two young children (1 and 3), looking for a town with top public/private schools, community events, easy drive to Portsmouth, Newburyport MA, Maine. Looking at houses with a 700-900k price range. Can anyone give me some info about North HAmpton or Rye as possibilities? Any other suggestions?

Seems like you can get something nice for that price in either of those towns. It will be an easy drive except for during the summer when Rt 1 and 95 has congestion (especially weekends). Not sure about schools, although I guess Rye sends their kids to Portsmouth or Hampton for high school. There's a lot of $$$ in the area - too rich for my blood.

Why not Portsmouth? With your price point, why not live there?

We love Portsmouth... but my husband really wants a yard. Not really a priority for me as I love the option of walking everywhere in Portsmouth. Went there yesterday to walk around and drive by some properties... the options in Portsmouth all have zero privacy and no yard to speak of.

Portsmouth is great, but also check out Newington. Its a very small town right next to Portsmouth, but it has lower taxes than Portsmouth, yet close to all the ammenties in Portsmouth.

Other than Newington, North Hampton, and Rye are the best towns in the seacoast to live.

700-900 would get you land AND waterfront on Great Bay or the rivers and still grant the access you want.

Thanks for the advice. I will look into Newington as well as Rye and North Hampton. Does anyone out there know more about schools in the area? Public and/or private schools. Thanks!

Julie,
Newington has a wonderful elementary school (through grade 5) then the kids go to Portsmouth. You need to visit Newington... not the Mall, but Newington Village area. There are many amenities to living in Newington.... country living but only minutes from down town Portsmouth, Fox Point and other areas of town reserved for resident use only.... including a boat launch and dock and mooring potential; free rubbish pick-up; wonderful town library... and the list goes on. My house is going on the market in 2 weeks..... 5 acres of land, cape cod style home, taxes under $4k/year..... perfect spot for a growing family.

I would say that Rye is generally more upscale than North Hampton; the main thing is that you're closer to the beach. If the key thing is near Portsmouth but with a yard, you might also consider Greenland.

If you have the dough, why not just send your kids to private school when they're ready?
That way you can choose a home based on the best house for the best price in the best location...and maybe even lower property taxes (like Rye or New Castle).

Newington Village is also right at the end of a runway. Pease is not a busy airport by city standards, but the National Guard KC-135 Statotankers are in and out several times a day.
