So, this is definitely going to be biased...but regardless I do have some good stuff in here as to why I think that New Hampshire is one of the best states in the United States.

This is going to be a rant type thingy...so bear with me.

So basically I was born in Plainfield, New Hampshire in 1992 (yeshhh, I am just 19 but regardless I have lived a lot of places :P) and I grew up in New Hampshire for 13 years and moved after the death of my father due to terminal colon cancer. After we left New Hampshire we have always missed a lot of things about it (#1 being father's grave) as well as the people, weather, and etc.

After leaving New Hampshire, I have lived in Vermont, Maine, Florida, Thailand, Japan, Hong Kong, and Macau. I have visited and have had experience in most of the north east US and asia, as well as visited several mid west states, Texas, and California.

Still, after being around the world and around the country...I still feel that no place really compares to New Hampshire at it's fullest.

There are so many things about New Hampshire that I miss...

-No tax...it is pretty nice going to a store and not having to pay extra in tax. (As for property taxes, etc...I have no say in it as I have never owned my own home...but my parents owned our house and they never particularly complained about taxes...except, I suppose we did have neighbours who didn't like the taxes...aka Ed and Elaine Brown...)

-Natural scenery was always that best. Beautiful, green, fresh, and always something new...I remember often being driven to elementary school and either seeing deer, or moose in the woods. We had a pond and one year there were beavers, and every year we had blue herons. During the winters we had white owls and more.

-Stone fences/walls...very strange thing to miss but since leaving NH I have not really seen anything comparable to these...they are basically fences/walls of stones that are very old usually covered with moss...we had them all over our property and something about them reminds me of home.

-The weather...this is something that usually baffles some people...but the weather in New Hampshire is awesome. The summers are warm with a perfect breeze, the spring is full of rain and sun...our pond would always overflow down a large hill and we would have to collect the trout that got stuck at the bottom...the falls were perfect and they were nippy but always had this distinct smell and feeling...the leaves were amazing. The winters re what I miss the most as I have not seen snow in over 2 years...closest snow I saw was on Mt Fuji in Japan but sadly we were unable to visit while in Tokyo and surrounding towns. I am currently in south west Florida and I keep wanting to go to New Hampshire and experience another nor-easter...it is a strange thing to say, but nothing is truly better then waking up to everything covered in snow with a small snow drizzle and shoveling your drive way and then coming inside next to the fireplace and warming up with a dog next to you (in my case, our German Sherpherd Hanno)

Mount Washington is another pretty legit thing :P

Covered bridges are everywhere and they truly are pretty neat. Plainfield is right next to VT and there is one of the longest covered bridges in the US there.

The people in NH are friendly as well...many people always say there is the New England attitude and snarky sarcasm...but I never really experienced it in NH. From the smaller towns, everyone seems to be nice.

Lake Winnipesaukee - if you are from NH you know what I am talking about every thanksgiving we go there and meet and eat with family for several days...you know you are from NH when you can pronounce it let alone spell it correctly the first time.

Skiing is all over the place in NH...so if you love skiing you will love NH. I miss going to Sunnapee/whaleback and ripping snowwww.

On a side note...salamanders and newts are everywhere (for some reason, people think salamanders and newts are the same thing...they aren't newts are the orange suckers in the rain and salamanders are the swimmers in the pond )

There are so many things about NH...I can't go through them all

There are so many things about NH that make it amazing...if you agree, or have any more thoughts post below.

Yes, I definitely agree with all those points that the OP made. I am here visting family presently, and NH just has a certain quality of life that doesn't exist in most areas of the US these days.

Most people don't realize how good it is in NH until they leave it and have to live somewhere else. I think living in other places is a good thing, though, as it really helps you appreciate where you came from. I can't wait to come back.

I've got a stone wall that runs 1000' down my property line on the land I bought a couple of years ago. You bet I'll be highlighting that stone wall in my landscaping plan.

6 months in Baghdad is making me miss it even more. You'd really appreciate NH over here. I don't know how these people live here. No wonder they're so angry...

I grew in Northwest CT so I know what you're talking about. I have moved around a bit and seen some other states and I miss new England to. I had forgotten about the stonewalls until you mentioned them. Although when I did go visit CT last year I always kept looking at them. The other thing I missed when I was living in the south was the cool clear creeks and rivers. Down South the water is all brown and muddy and nasty looking. That water does not look inviting and you can't help but wonder what is going to come up and bite you.

Now I'm where there is actual seasons and clear water but the terrain is very rugged and it's nothing but pine trees. That gets boring and the terrain can make for some hard hiking. In the east it is rugged but at least it's walkable.

One of the best things about NH is low population. I want to thank all the above posters for attracting a horde of outsiders to come here and screw up our little garden of Eden.
When people ask me if NH is nice I tell them "No, the winters are harsh and so are the people"
So please folks, zip it up !!!!!!!!!!!! so we can keep a good thing going..

The winters and the property taxes do keep out quite a number of people, though. Some people can't justify paying 6-7K a year in property taxes on a house that needs quite a bit of work.

NH isn't for everyone regardless I think people should come visit. Most can't handle the winter's so not a lot of people want to stay. We had friends from FL come up during the winter to visit and they were interested in moving and then we had a blizzard and they said forget it. haha
