I noticed there is a very current Manchester vs Nashua thread.

So here is a Concord vs Manchester thread.

Can you please give me your opinion and info on a break down/comparison of Concord vs Manchester.

Job Market
Crime
Housing prices
Cleanliness of city
Taxes
Police presence
Schools
Medical care/Hospitals

Please add what I may have missed in topics.

By the way, we are not even from NH. So I cant even give my 2 cents-lol

concord is small enough you can sort of 'grasp' the entire city. Manchester is just sort of a big city, with some very nasty crime

"Nasty crime" compared to what? Rest of the US cities, most certainly not, compared to a more country side town in NH, well, maybe....

Manchester is actually a very nice city to live in. Most of the things you need are available right here, and if not, either Nashua, Concord, or even Boston are all very close. You're basically within 1hr. of mountains, beach, Boston...

i hardly know anything about concord but can tell you my opinion on manchester.

there is crime in manchester, but it's not significant. Crime Statistics a couple of murders a year is pretty damn low for a city of its size. just avoid some areas and don't walk around at night with your wallet in your hand, and you'll be fine. i commuted to manchester for a number of years to attend college for day and night classes, and i've been to the city countless times to shop, hang out, visit family, etc.- i never had a bad experience. NH in general feels very safe.

housing prices are not cheap in NH unless you're in the middle of nowhere. property taxes there are no joke. i think manchester is more expensive than concord but i could be wrong. it's a clean and beautiful city although it can look grimy when there's dirty snow everywhere- you get that with any snowy city, though. File:Manch-mills-westside.jpg - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia i think the mills along the river are an especially beautiful sight.

there are some very wonderful colleges in manchester, including my alma mater, UNH. i attended manchester high school west for a semester and i don't have a high opinion of it- i found it overpopulated and a bit scary. there are some fabulous private schools like derryfield (i went there) and trinity high school that have great reputations.

because it's an ubran environment you will find plenty of medical care, including elliot hospital and the dartmouth hitchcock clinic which are less than five minutes from each other. there's also the catholic medical center which is highly rated. there are lots of doctors to choose from.

there are police around but they aren't needed in a lot of places. you can go to a bank or a rite aid and never see a cop (which is not the case at all in some major cities.)

as someone else mentioned, it's a great central location- you are less than an hour from boston and very close to the beaches and mountains. i really don't think the location can be beat.

Thank you for the replies. Sounds like NH in general has a low crime rate, thats great news.

Between Concord and Manchester which area/city has the stronger job market?

Also what are some are some of the nicer suburbs of both cities? Other then Bow, I see that the taxes are way up there!

That area east of Concord that you were looking at before is still a pretty nice area.

It's probablly 25- 30 miles. It's all nice roads so it's not a bad drive. I've always chose to live away from the cities and had to travel some distance for work.

Manchester is closer to Boston. Many in NH work in the Boston or 128 belt.

I have lived in both Manchester and Concord.

Concord is a very small city as far as population but large in size. You can live in the city center where houses are close together like any other older Eastern city and Concord has very rural areas. Concord also has Penacook - part of Concord.

Manchester is a much larger city. And with a very large city goes the same unwanted activities of any large city. Manchester has it's share of tenement housing. Manchester also has some great neighborhoods. The North End being one.

Both cities are former mill towns. Manchester for knitting mills and Concord for printing.

All of the NH state offices are located in Concord Heights.

Both cities are divided by the Merrimack River. And interstate Route 93 goes through both cities.

Both cities have their share of traffic. I have waited more in Concord traffic at times then when in downtown Boston. Traffic is less of a concern now as the economy has put a dent into that.

New Hampshire does not skimp on police so both cities have good police departments.

Both cities have adequate shopping. And the distance between the two is not great.
