I come with a few questions. First of all, I've lived in Upstate NY (Rochester, to be exact) my entire life, and it's time for a change. I'm planning on re-locating late Summer of this year, and for a while I've toyed with the idea of Austin, and even Seattle (which I've now decided not to do, since it's simply too far).
Austin is beautiful, but, the weather is drastically different. And apparently, it's miserable for allergies. I'm very conflicted, the main reason I wanted to leave NY was to escape the cold, and because it plays hell on my sinuses; I so much as walk outside and am sick. But if the allergies are bad there, that could be just as worse..
Anyways, my grandmother was born and raised in Nashua, NH, before my grandfather & her wed and they moved back here to start a family. As such, they usually visit once or twice a year, and for over 10 years, I've been to Nashua and surrounding areas various times. I love New Hampshire. It's only 6 or so hours away, but to me, it's so different. I have a lot of family in the area, but I don't really talk to any of them.. I root for all Boston teams in sports, I've been to Boston many times and I LOVE IT.
So my question to anybody that has stuck in here this long through my rant, is, is Nashua a feasible option to live? I mean, is there affordable studio apartments (most important), good or decent jobs for somebody that isn't looking for anything other than a basic job, and is it worth the move? Better question, how close can I get to the city of Boston without paying a lot of $? I know living in the city is very expensive, and I know Nashua is about 50 minutes or so away, but I figure I'd ask.
If you move from Rochester, NY to Nashua NH you will feel like you moved halfway to Florida. SE NH winters are far more mild then upstate NY (I grew up outside of Albany). The Atlantic Ocean moderates out climate without the “Lake effect storms”.
The economy seems to be recovering in this area. There is a new industrial area being developed near the Manchester airport. Check the web for job listings. BTW – what sort of work are you looking for?
Nashua and Manchester are both a reasonable bus commute to Boston. The I-95 and I-495 high tech industrial areas between require a car commute.
I suggest buying a copy of the DeLorme Highway Map of New England and a State of NH map as well. Pick a decent weekend later this winter and drive over (6-8 hours in dry conditions). Take a few days to and look around.
For work I'm not really looking for anything specific, per say. Just your run of the mill hourly wage type job; whether it be something as simple as say, retail, or factory work or the sort.
Also, unfortunately I know Boston is WAY out of my price range. A studio in the city would go for at least $800 a month at the cheapest for rent, I would assume. So I need something outside of the city and more affordable.
I moved from an hour southwest of Rochester to just north of Concord a few years ago. My allergies are worse here. I'm willing to live with it because I love New Hampshire for reasons that might not be important to you (namely, it's an outdoorsman's paradise, hunter friendly and not a socialist hell like NY). I love winter and didn't want to give it up, so didn't even consider anywhere south or west. If I didn't care about snow, I'd probably go to AZ and get relief from the allergies.
I'm actually familiar with winter in Rochester and the weather here is slightly colder, but with less snow. Watch our weather forecasts for a few weeks and compare the temps to yours. Probably not much difference.
Housing and vehicle costs are quite a bit higher here. Western NY has cheap rent compared to the rest of the northeast. You can see prices on nneren.com and NH Craigslist to get an idea of what it costs.
