I've actually lived in both Portsmouth (10 years) and Plattsburgh (7 years). I would recommend both for different reasons. If the beauty of the area and what it has to offer is more important than how open and friendly the locals are, then hands-down move to Portsmouth. This is similar to what I've heard about Paris - few visit there for the Parisians. Don't expect a warm, Mormonesque reception in Portsmouth. Plattsburgh, however, is right on Lake Champlain, has a lower cost of living, but is smaller and doesn't offer as much as Portsmouth. The locals in Plattsburgh are more approachable, and very country. Whereas Portsmouth can't be bothered with your business, you may find that Plattsburgh is too much up in it. Both are located roughly an hour from from two of the best cities in North America (Boston and Montreal). However, for me, Portsmouth doesn't need proximity to Boston to be a great place to live, whereas, had I not been able to go to Montreal once a month, I wouldn't have spent 7 years in Plattsburgh.

Nice comparison of Portsmouth and Plattsburgh, Seatacky.

You all do realize that the OP posted her question back in April of 2012? I would hope she has chosen a locale by now.

Thanks, Lady Fern. No, I didn't notice that. I'm surprised it showed up near the top of my NH threads being that old. I hope that's not an indication of how active/current the NH forum is.

A previous poster made a recent comment on this thread bumping it up toward the top. Otherwise, the forum is pretty current and always active
