People don't come here to get information that they can easily see on a GPS or an atlas. They come for REAL answers from REAL people, who have their feet on the ground and can give answers based on experience, not what they've read somewhere. The OP already had the experience of driving with the help of online driving directions, and it doesn't sound pleasant.
I don't know what everybody else's experience with GPS is like, but mine typically takes the most convoluted routes to anywhere... when I go the way I think is shorter, the ETA timer bounces down quite a bit, almost every time!
I use my GPS and have done this exact route by actually driving a vehicle.
Are there other ways? Of course. Longer probably but possibly less traffic.
Get to Hartford any way you wish if you want to avoid Route 95. Then the rest is as stated above.
GPS is useless for that route. Mine insists on getting me onto I-95 instead of the parkway. I find yahoo driving directions give results that are actually helpful.

Do you have a GPS? Do you have an atlas?
Once you get to Hartford - there is no traveling on Route 95.

which is a parking lot

I drive from NH to the Jersey shore two - three times a year. Lately the route I've been taking home has been:
95N to 91N
91N to 15N
15N turns into 84E
84E to Mass Pike
Mass Pike to 495N
495N to 93N which will take you to Manchester in about 30 minutes
Depending on the time of day that trip could take a really long time, but if you time it right you should make it in around four hours.

I would start by getting on I-87 or Bronx River Parkway north.
Then take the Cross County Parkway east, which become the Hutchinson River Parkway.
This becomes the Merritt Parkway (Rt 15) in Connecticut, which around Bridgeport changes its name to the Wilbur Cross Parkway.
You probably know this, but trucks are not allowed on the parkways.
When you get to Meriden CT, get on I-91 north. I've done this drive a lot, the only thing to watch for is that the parkway is a racetrack. Everyone does 70 mph close to each other. It beats the I-95 parking lot.
After this I am honestly not sure which is the best route to Manchester. I would take I-84 east out of Hartford to I-495 north which flows into I-90 (Mass Pike), then pick up I-93 in Andover and head north. The hard part is how to get from Worcester MA to Hookset NH. This looks like one of those cases of "you can't get there from here." Maybe driving through the villages would save time, I'm not sure about that part.

Yes from Hartford youtake 84 east to the Mass Pike eastbound.
exit 11a to 495 north
Exit 40b route 93 north to manchester
