The town considers an automobile to be "personal property" just like a house or a boat so the tax is the value times the town tax rate. The state fee is based on vehicle weight and catagory.

These carrying costs are one reason I buy used cars. The other is they cost less including the inivitable repairs.

Well, when I lived in NH, although some of my playtoys are old, in the town I lived in (and they are still garaged there) , it is $240 a year for one of them, property tax, and it is 24 years old... it is based on original purchase price.

For a current model year, the taxrate is $18 per $1,000. The tax rate decreases to $15 per $1,000 the next year and goes down to $3 per $1,000 after five years. For example, the fee on a new car with a list price of $30,000 would be $540 for a full year. New Hampshire also charges additional state and community fees for registration, including a state fee based on the vehicle's weight.
