This weekend, March 19th and 20th, 2011 is the NH Maple Weekend, but my family refers to it as Maple Madness. Check the list below--if you live in (or near) New Hampshire, there is probably a sugar house close enough that you can get there one (or both!) days. Enjoy
I went to Peterson's in Londonderry today and it was really great. That maple mist is one of the best smells ever. If you can get over there, make sure you get some maple whoopie pies. SO GOOD
Went to a great place in Francestown and another in Weare yesterday. Great days and everyone was in a wonderful mood and very nice. The folks who owned both places said the sugaring this year was great; far-far-far better than last year.
This was our 3rd time partaking in these open houses and its become a coming of spring event for us; well worth it too!
It looks like a very poor year again for sugaring in much of NH. Low temperatures have been much too warm and this is definitely a trend of warmth that has been going on for quite awhile now. March doesn't look like the massive blowtorch compared to 2012, but lows seem to be trending much milder.
while driving back from my parents last week, I saw a number of trees in Brookline that were already being tapped. I'm guessing that they may be leased to Parker's but I don't really know (it is the same road...). I know they said they started early last year and had a great season. Interestingly, last year when we came up I saw (for the first time!) the new tubing method of tapping.. haven't seen any of that this year. I kinda like the old sap pails.
I think it may be too late now for tapping. At least in my yard the sap seems to be done.
I had one tree overflow a 5 gallon bucket twice with two taps. The tree next to it only gave me a couple gallons. That was in late Feb. Next year I need to set a reminder around Valentines day to get the taps in. I think I started a week too late.
