NH does not require a driver to carry Auto Insurance except in specific situations. Driving in Vermont today we were stopped and the police officer asked for proof ofd insurance. We told him we live in NH nd are not required to have insurance. He siad, "But you are in Vermont and we require it." So I said so you mean that if my state doesn't require it, you won't let me drive in vermont without it and he said yes

It sounds like the Vermont police officer was on the lookout for NH license plates. Years ago there was a similar situation in Massachusetts. A lady from Rhode Island was traveling on a MA highway and an officer stopped her and said the same thing, it went to court, and the lady from RI won (declaring RI'ers did not need insurance to travel in MA), at the time the case did garner a fair amount of publicity (although many disagreed with the decision). RI does requires auto insurance now.
Incidentally, when RI began requiring auto insurance, rates did not go down.
I take offense to that.. Im all for less government and more freedom and i love the fact that nh doesnt make car insurance mandatory along with seatbelts and helmets but im going to give my opinion that its really stupid not to have car insurance and like another poster says thanks for my higher premiums..
And yeah if its against the law in another state kinda makes sense that it would be against the law for a nh driver as well..
