I am now reading "Following Atticus" and wanted to share. It's pretty much based in NH and tells how an unlikely duo (seriously out-of-shape guy and his miniature Schnauzer) decide to hike 4000-footers in the Whites - in winter.

It's entertaining, especially if you are a dog owner and a hiker. Bet of all it's authentic NH. Might make a nice gift.

I figure there are other good books that are based in NH so why not have a thead for it?

Peyton Place was always one of my favorites.

"tall trees, tough men"

the logging industry in NE, mostly NH. Did you know that in the days of sailing ships - those with the biggest fleets controlled the economic wealth of the planet - and the engine for those ships were masts from NH? The NH area was the silicon valley of those sea trading days.

And the things those loggers did - makes today's macho man seem girly girly.

These recommendations aren't specifically NH but are NE and worth the time.

First, you might enjoy "Look to the Mountain" by Legrand Cannon. It's an historical novel about early settlers in NE and a good read.

In a completely different vein, "Go With Me" by Castle Freeman Jr., is a modern day thriller/drama set in Vermont and a real page turner.

I liked Following Atticus.
Other suggestions:
Life At The Top by Eric Pinder - about the Mt. Washington Observatory
Curious New England by Joseph Citro and Dian Foulds - about eccentric places in New England

I collect books about Vermont and some New England ones - if anyone wants Vermont suggestions let me know!

Also...if you like mystery/thrillers try Archer Mayor. Mostly set in Vermont but some in NH, Mass.

Vermont author Chris Bohjalian's "Before You Know Kindness" and "The Night Strangers" also take place in New Hampshire.

Well if you're going to drag Vermont into it....
Bag Balm and Duct Tape. It's set in VT but it could just as well have been in northern NH.

Not Without Peril: 150 Years of Misadventure on the Presidential Range of New Hampshire, by Nicholas Howe.

Great book about the many ways to die in the Mountains of NH!

I haven't had a chance to read it myself, but my dad really enjoyed "A Walk in the Woods" by Bill Bryson. It's about his through hike on the Appalachian Trail. I gave it to my dad right before we moved to NH. Bryson apparently gives a lot of history and info on the New England sections of the A.T.
