If you are a AAA member, let them know your route and they'll print up books (I think they're called TripTix) specifically for your route, and will include info on hotels/motels/restaurants all along the way. You get Your AAA discount on lodging & meals too, in some places.
I used to do Red Roof Inns, but they went downhill it seemed to me(prices went up). So I started staying at Hampton Inn's if I can find a cheap one.....you have to search, but I can find them very often for the same price range as Red Roofs. I used to stay at RR for 60 bucks(total)....but they seem to have gone to 79, 89 or even more(plus those absurd taxes). I can get Hampton Inn which is a step up for 89 very often....and it comes with a get you out the door breakfast and they have surprisingly good coffee. You have to really search though.....you can also get a room in some casino's cheap....like outside Omaha if taking I-80 hit up the Horseshoe casino....sometimes the rooms are very reasonable and the rooms are really nice...this is hit and miss though. If you like poker...its worth it if you arent on a tight schedule. Or you can stay, get a player card...play a few games and they send you free stuff or discounts for next time if you drive regularly. Also Garden Inn's can be cheaper now, less than 100. Pets can stay at Hampton Inn's, but often its 25 bucks extra....sometimes not....but usually.
