We are relocating to the NH area in June and looking for a great spot to raise our kiddos. Both under 5, but growing up fast and schools will be important. Here is what we are looking for

- Great outdoor activites (hiking, skiing, sailing, et)
- Some sort of rec center with gym for kiddos to burn off energy on really really frigid day (YMCA)
- A downtown area that is walkable and classic NE quaint. We both grew up in a small town in Maine (Boothbay Harbor)

- Love the idea of some land and letting the family be outside messing about without worrying about dense traffic and such. Space to run around in the woods.

- Community is big, always been a part of vol. fire dept et

- We would love to be on one of the lakes as we have both grew up sailing and professionally racing.

We initially have been directed to Meredith, wolfeboro, areas...

I will be flying a bit so near Manchester and closer than a few hours to Logan would be great.

Any suggestions or help would be greatly appreciated.

I would definitely look at Meredith and Wolfeboro! Those seem to be the most logical options for your criteria. Of the two, I think Wolfeboro schools are probably on the higher peg, but I'm not qualified enough to say with certainty.

The other towns in the region with highly-regarded school systems - Gilford and Moultonborough - really lack a town center of any significance.

Ashland is smaller, but it might be worth looking into as well. Generally the school district isn't highly praised overall, but I've heard good things about the elementary school. The town definitely has a strong community feel.

Although it's not technically in the "Lakes Region," New London is situated on Lake Sunapee and also ticks all of your boxes (except that perhaps the "downtown" is a bit less walkable than the other options).

Meredith & Wolfeboro fit what you are looking for, but remember: in the summer these places are packed with traffic & tourists. Meredith more so....

I'm looking for similar qualities in a town and have a similar situation, 2 young kiddos under 5. I'm interested in hearing more about towns of this nature in NH.
