My fiancee and I recently moved to NH and are getting married soon. I work in ME and right now she works in NH. I saw from other threads here that the way that works with taxes is our combined income is used for determining the ME tax rate, but that I can fill out a schedule NRH form so she doesn't actually have ME taking anything from her income.

Thing is, she's looking at getting a promotion that would have her working in MA. How does it work if we're both working in states with income tax while living in NH? I've seen that if one spouse works in MA and the other in NH both get taxed in MA unless you file as an individual (correct me if I'm wrong there). What happens when I'm already paying a higher state income tax than MA charges anyway? Will MA also start taking tax from me on top of what I'm paying ME?

Thanks

Not an expert on taxes, but I can tell you from my own experience that MA taxes only the portion of your income that is earner in MA. I work in MA, my husband in NH, and we "only" pay MA taxes based on my income (I say "only", because I'm not too thrilled about paying so much and not getting anything in return - unless you count using MA highway for 2 exits). We file jointly.

Well that isn't terrible then. I guess I misunderstood what I read in other threads. Thanks

Pay more attention to enjoying where you live and each other than tax rates. Worrying about taxes in particular and finances in general will only, unless you have a huge inheritance, bring nothing but pain and discontent. Enjoy life, it does not last that long.

You're welcome! Congratulations - on your marriage and on promotion And sorry for the typo in the original post - I meant "earned", not "earner"

Congratulations on your marriage and your fiancee's promotion!
