Twenty years ago I had a dear friend that lived in one of these, and the apartment was beautiful. Frankly, I was surprised at how nice it was given its location. Of course, things seem to have gotten a lot worse in that area of town.
It's not the St. George Apartments. Those are on the corner of Pine and Orange, near 521 Pine (I think the apartments have addresses on both Pine and Orange.) They're right near the Currier Museum. They're fairly nice apartments, but in an area with significant drug activity and other crime. People aren't overstating things - I lived there when I first moved here, not knowing anything about Manchester. I actually really liked my apartment, with 12' ceilings, and even the neighbors I saw in my building, but I dealt with my buzzer being buzzed all night long by people I didn't know, yelling, screaming, fighting outside my windows. I broke my lease early and only later did I find out that maybe 8 years earlier, a woman had been murdered and dismembered in an apartment across the street. In the last year or two, a man living in that same apartment (as the murder) opened his door and was shot in the face.
241 Pine is much further down, well on the other side of Bridge Street, near Lake Ave. and the Verizon Wireless Arena. As far as I can tell, that area is even worse, with no redeeming qualities.
Red Oak was okay, at least for that building, plus I wasn't there for long enough to have too many conflicts. My apartment was actually (shockingly) somewhat expensive for Manchester (especially that area) and I do wonder whether Red Oak gives slightly better service for that building, and their Opera House Apts. ("luxury apts") on Hanover Street.
