I guess some towns are better than others for road maintenance. Our road had gravel put into some soft spot ruts in the past few days. Problem gone.

The bottom line is that if you don't like living on a dirt road, don't buy a house on a dirt road. And don't buy a house there then ask for taxpayer dollars to pave it. The rest of us will be perfectly happy living there.

I'd suggest also finding out how good your town is for road maintenance. Ours is a priority road of some kind, so I'm told.

I've found that smaller towns maintain their dirt roads far better than their paved roads.

I loved living on a dirt road, I just had to dust a bit more during the summer months when the windows were open.

The lack of paved roads in most of the NH Lakes Region is one of the reasons we have decided to probably not retire there. I had a gravel driveway in Maine, and even that was a hassle in winter -- one time my car got stuck before I could get it into my garage -- this was before the "plow guy" could get to the driveway -- and a neighbor had to dig me out (which was very nice of him). I can't even imagine having to cope with entire roads like that!

In fact, that is one of my "musts" for buying our retirement home -- it must have a paved driveway that is connected to a paved roadway!

A paved driveway is nice in winter - when it comes to shoveling, snowblowing or plowing snow, that goes a lot better on pavement than on gravel, and without getting the gravel tossed into the garden and yard.
