Northern New England is known for its snow and ice. How important is it to have a vehicle with all wheel drive for regular living throughout the winter in New Hampshire?

It is not essential but certainly makes life easier. I have had front wheel drive my entire life until this year. I never got stuck but have had to leave the car a half mile from home and walk. With awd there is no concern.

All depends if you live on a hill or on dirt roads.

Otherwise, not needed.

It is quite helpful in rural areas, something fuel efficient like a Subaru has been a popular choice for good reason, unless plowing snow with a 4X4 truck.

It depends on where you live. I live in a hilly, rural area in northern NH, and I would be housebound for much of the winter without it.

If you have multiple cars in the family, it is good to have one be AWD due to the snow. AWD does cost more in gas and in repairs over time. A front wheel drive car is OK if you have snow tires.....

I have a friend in CT who swears by studded snow tires and says AWD isn't needed if one gets these. Thoughts?

I live in an area where I could probably squeak by without it, but it is huge peace of mind that I do. I never worry about the weather at all.

This. Along with your location, road maintenance and your winter driving comfort level will play a role. Here in the Seacoast area my RWD 2011 Charger with good all seasons does just fine during the winter.

In addition, mud season is just as problematic where I live as winter driving.
