At least when you click "Accept" on a privacy policy you were given a faint chance to know what you were agreeing to,
You obviously know NOTHING about commercial practices with regard to data aggregation and sale. Most of it is not governed by a so called "privacy policy". Few privacy policies are about privacy. They're just a notice that the company can do anything it wants with your data. Just go read one sometime.
When you applied for and received that "loyalty card" that gave you money off on your groceries, you probably did not realize they use the cards a bait to be able to associate your purchases with you.
Do you realize that when you purchase something with a credit card (really good paranoids do cash only), you are giving up more personal info?
At least DL info is governed by state law. Private activities rarely are.
But please, fear on....after all, people DO get hit by lightning.
I guess Shaw's has MyMixx, but I don't know if that involves a card, never been invited to apply
Wow, you sure like to rant about what you assume other people do and do not know.

You're showing your age -- pretty sure no grocery store chain with New Hampshire locations uses a loyalty card these days
But they sure do elsewhere, even as far away as MA. At least where I am, we don't have a lot of grocery choices. Shaws, Market Basket, Hannafords come to mind.

Price Chopper does. Also most drug store chains...Rite-Aid, CVS, and I think Walgreens. Some local stores use them as well.
Are we only allowed to opt-out of having the DMV retain our SSN and photo at the time of license renewal? (Not that it matters if they aren't actually following through with the deletion.)
Getting back on topic, ever wonder about the machine-readable data in that weird 2-D barcode?
Depending on the state, the barcode may contain all the information on the front of the license. There are scanners that may be used at liquor stores, night clubs, soon pot shops to quickly confirm birth date and that the license is real. Others stores may use it to scan information if you are using a check. Some medical institutions will scan it as well to confirm the insurance data. Police also scan the license rather than typing it it - makes for faster and more effective stops.

The grocery cards. I just use a fake name and fake address.

Many businesses use the scanner not just to confirm DOB and validity, but also to build a marketing database. NH is one of two states which restrict the use of scanned license data, see RSA 263:12 X.
Real-ID requires a certain minimum set of data in the barcode, more than what most states include by default in the code on the back of their older licenses.
Not quite. They may scan it to confirm identity. Insurance data is NOT on a DL.
Sorry - I meant it's used to confirm the information on the insurance card - name, address, DOB - not the insurance itself.
